Resident Evil 4 Mural Puzzle Solution And Walkthrough

Navigating the perilous lake region in Chapter 4 of Resident Evil 4 brings players face-to-face with the intricate Mural Cave puzzle. This central mechanism acts as a gatekeeper, requiring Leon Kennedy to locate two crucial stone key items before he can claim the Church Insignia. Understanding how to read the environmental clues around the cavern network makes solving this challenge straightforward and efficient.
Finding the Mural Cave and Understanding the Objective
After surviving the intense Del Lago boss encounter, players dock their boat and enter the shadowy passageways of the Mural Cave. Inside, a stone shrine features two large open hands flanking a central locked pedestal. A nearby wall painting depicts the surrounding lake and highlights two key locations: the Small Cave Shrine and the Large Cave Shrine.
To unlock the shrine, players must travel to both locations by boat to retrieve the Blasphemer's Head and the Apostate's Head. Each shrine houses a stone door sealed by a symbol-based combination lock. Observing the yellow painted markings on the surrounding rock walls reveals the necessary combinations.
Solving the Small Cave Shrine Symbol Puzzle
Located on the northeastern side of the lake, the Small Cave Shrine presents a compact area with yellow graffiti scattered across walls and structures. Players must align their view from specific angles to see how split markings merge into complete symbols. These environmental clues correspond directly to the buttons on the shrine's pedestal device.
The three correct inputs are the three squiggly lines, the bird-like figure, and the connected chain structure. Pressing these buttons in any sequence opens the sealed chamber containing the Blasphemer's Head key item. Players can also grab additional valuable loot before returning to their boat.
Conquering the Large Cave Shrine Challenge
The Large Cave Shrine sits to the south and features aggressive enemy encounters alongside its puzzle mechanism. Players should clear out the hostile Ganados first to inspect the cavern layout safely. Yellow symbols are painted across pillars, rock faces, and upper ledges throughout the multi-level chamber.
Inputting the two adjacent chain links, the curved lines facing each other, and the tower-like symbol unlocks the door. Retrieving the Apostate's Head from the altar allows Leon to complete the second half of the requirement. With both stone heads in hand, players can navigate back across the water.
Claiming the Church Insignia and Moving Forward
Returning to the Mural Cave, place both stone heads onto the open hands on either side of the shrine. The central pedestal will open automatically, granting Leon the coveted Church Insignia needed to unlock the church doors. This unlocks passage to the next main story objective while concluding Chapter 4's primary lake investigation.
Before rushing off to the church, take time to explore remaining lake landmarks or complete side requests. Collecting extra treasures and upgrading weapons ensures Leon is fully prepared for upcoming boss fights.
